Textual Analysis: "Wasn't expecting that" Jamie Lawson

For this textual analysis I will be looking at Jamie Lawson's song "Wasn't expecting that". It was produced through atlantic records after he was signed with Ed Sheeran's new record company Gingerbread. The music belongs to the pop genre however the music video doesn't show broad characteristics of this as it is a narrative without any elements of performance which is unusual in pop music videos. The artist is not seen at all through out the music video.

The lyrics of the music video link to the visuals because the narrative of the video is the couples lives going back in time showing what has happened between them since they met which was unexpected. The lyrics "I wasn't expecting that" links to every different shot and point in their lives because they didn't expect it to happen for example they had a baby girl and dressed up like dinosaurs together to entertain her and it was an unexpected situation which is what is being enforced through the song in these specific lyrics.
The lyrics "It was only a smile but my heart went wild" is linking to her smiling at him in the music video. There is eye contact between them throughout the music video which is linking to this lyric and whenever they look at each other they are smiling.
When the lyrics say "i thought love wasn't meant to last" it links very well with the visuals because the whole video is showing that they are in love and them growing old together since they were young which is showing that this particular line in the song.
There is visuals of their wedding and the weather when the lyrics are "we were married in spring". This is showing what is said in the song showing that the lyrics can be very understood my the audience because it is shown in the visuals.

The artist is not seen in the music video at all it is only a male actor and actress who are looking as if they are a couple who have been together over years. An image of the artist isn't offered to the audience. This is the first music video to have been released since he has been signed with Gingerbread so when comparing this new video to old music videos we see a large difference in the quality. His music video for "real thing" is in the style of an old short film in black and white where the lyrics are on the screen it is no where near as good as his new music video.

The music video shows a large change in the way he is presenting his music through the videos and it is a good change. The music video for "Wasn't expecting that" is showing a heartwarming couple who had been together all their live which in the end the woman dies it is a complete change from his previous work and really shows a change in the artist.

In the music video we see the couple in bed with bare shoulders in a close up which is indicating us to thinking that they have or are going to sleep together. They are then kissing in bed still a close up on their shoulders and faces however their positions change as the white bed sheet comes down over them. This sort of shot is seen again when the music video goes back in time to the girl taking her bra of and the guy laying on the bed this is showing the first time they slept together.

The music video is completely narrative based it is a story about the couple lives together there is no performance from the artist because he isn't in the music video and it isn't abstract either you completely understand what is going on throughout the video and about what happens at the end.

To conclude this music video is of the pop genre and is about a couple life together until the day she dies and he is left on his own. It goes back in time showing their special moments together happy and sad but  showing them together at the end of her life.
